Description

Robotics 1/2 Year Course for EV3

This product contains my course materials for a course called "Robotics Programming" that I have taught for many years for grades 8-12. The course uses Lego EV3 robotics equipment.

The concept of this course is to focus on programming and to de-emphasize building. In the first part of the course, students cycle through stations I have set up with robots that are mostly built. They work through challenges using a single sensor, then rotate to the next station to do something a little different but similar enough to reinforce the programming skills. That takes up about a third of a half year course depending on the group.

The other 2/3 of the course consists of teams working to solve robotics challenges. They re-use the skills they built in the stations. These are standard challenges from any robotics class (maze crawler, sumo-bots, tug-o-war bots, etc.). I have included 18 of students' favorite challenges here.

I teach out of InnovationAssessments.com where there are free features.

Contents:

1) DOCX format, student copy of cycle 1 (motor control)

2) DOCX format, student copy of cycle 2 (touch sensor control)

3) DOCX format, student copy of cycle 3 (color sensor control)

4) DOCX format, teacher MASTER copy of all stations. The design has eight stations with slightly different tasks and robotics "playing fields". This document includes instructions, the three stations noted above, a set of stations for ultrasonic sensor, a grading rubric for code, and some simple challenges.

5) DOCX format, a template for a lab report. I have students submit lab reports for the first part of the course rotating through stations.

6) An introductory powerpoint slideshow explaining how the station rotation works.

7) a template course syllabus

8) ZIP format, a compressed file of 83 multiple-choice questions designed for upload and install at InnovationAssessments.com. You can create an account there and generate a variety of free and paid premium assessments. Install this ZIP file at InnovationAssessments.com and you can edit the questions and generate automated online tests and printable tests.

9) an on-task observation rubric (I often find students get stalled and need to be held accountable for remaining on task. Some groups are better than others, depending on whether they chose the class or are taking it because they have to in fulfillment of requirements).

10) Three HTML files of the multiple-choice test question bank (of 83 questions). One file is the questions, one file is the key without questions, one file is the key with the questions. If you want to use this instead of the test generators at InnovationAssessments.com, you can easily copy-paste from the HTML files.

11) folder of 18 robotics challenges (some in in ODT and some in DOCX format).

About the multiple-choice questions: These questions cover a range of programming languages, depending on what I was teaching that year. There are questions on RobotC, Python, and the Mindstorms graphical language. There are generic programming questions.
