What educators are saying

My students loved creating their own food trucks. This hands-on project based learning activity helped my students apply the math skills they learned throughout the school year.
Love using this if we have extra flex days to get students engaging in math in an authentic and real-life way!

Cake Pop Cafe - students will choose cake pop flavors and combinations, scale a recipe, buy supplies, make a cooking schedule, and determine cost per unit, selling price and profit.

Create a Popsicle Cart - students will research popsicle flavors, survey classmates to find out what flavors their audience is interested in, decide how much of each flavor to make, scale a recipe, set prices, and convert measurements used in recipes.

Plan a School Field Day - students will choose activities, set a schedule, purchase supplies, create a scaled map of the field day even locations, create an attendance schedule, research common first aid situations and create first aid direction cards.

Design a Gingerbread House - students will buy supplies to decorate a gingerbread house, graph the candy used to decorate the house, draw a floor plan of the gingerbread house interior layout, brainstorm descriptive words to describe their house and write a real estate listing to sell their gingerbread house.

Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
Apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
