Physical Education Grade 3-5 Evolution of Games Unit (IB PYP PE - Inquiry Based)
Description
All lessons are based on a 45-minute class allocation twice a week. Unit format is an introduction to how the games were played in the past vs. games we know today. Unit takes approximately 8 weeks to complete. Two inquiry worksheets included as part of the lessons.
The purpose of this unit is to introduce the origin of different sports that students know today and recognize how they have changed over time. This particular unit starts on the focus of the evolution of baseball in five different games, and then branches off into students using their own interests to create a new game from a sport they already love, to which then they will play and teach to the class. At the end of the unit, students should know the basic history of the covered sports or games, know how the sport is played today, and will create their own new game to play within the variation of the rules. They should physically and verbally be able to show understanding of the concepts and build on their knowledge throughout the unit. Also suitable for Inquiry based learning such as IB PYP PE - Where We Are In Place and Time - Transdisciplinary Unit Standards Included.
This Unit is the second of a series of units throughout a child's schooling in Physical Education. Teachers can build with the Grades 1-3 History of Games Unit, and then build on this unit with the Grades 4-6 International Games Unit.
