Description
This Newton's Laws of Motion Project will help your students differentiate and understand Newton's 3 Laws of Motion! The structured notes will help your students to sort out the three laws and the video demonstration project will help you to assess their understanding. Students are provided one visually-rich structured notes page for each of Newton's three Laws of Motion (students fill in the missing words). The notes follow a Powerpoint containing introductions to each law, examples, explanations, and additional slides for formative assessment, such as a video clip of Wile E. Coyote that students watch and pick out examples that obey and disobey Newton's Laws. I have found that the students really use the structured notes to design their video demonstrations and to correctly incorporate scientific vocabulary.
Also included is the directions for a Newton's Laws Demonstration Project, for which students design either an in-class demonstration or a video that demonstrates and explains each of Newton's Laws being employed in everyday life. My students LOVE this project and most of them choose to make a video. They get so creative producing videos that blow me away! They use trampolines, sports, dogs, rockets, gymnastics, (I've even had a student film her pilot dad flying a plane!) to demonstrate and explain the laws!
For the project, I let my students work in groups of up to 3 and since I have five science classes, I let them work with anyone whom I teach. This really motivates them because they can work with friends. I give them a couple of weeks to complete the project once it’s been assigned. If you assign this project just as you begin a mini-unit on Newton’s Laws, your students will pay more attention to the science behind the Laws as they think of creative ways to demonstrate them in their videos! I have included the editable version of the project directions and rubric in case you need to make changes to it!
On ‘Newton Day’, the student groups present their videos to the class. Your students will NEVER forget Newton’s Laws after hearing them stated so many times!!
I have also included two sample student videos that you can show to your students or just use as a reference for yourself! The student notes and project directions are included as editable files, also.
