What educators are saying

My students loved this project! We started by learning about traditional Kumihimo weaving. The kids made their own looms and loved learning how to weave.

Description

Warning: These Braided Cords are Addictive! If you need a fun and easy jewelry or textile-related lesson, this is a FUN art activity that can be created using a paper plate!

  • I used this lesson last Spring as students finished their Kente Cloth Cardboard Weaving lesson. These braids were a great "early-finisher" activity to keep students engaged while other students finished up their weavings.
  • I used simple paper plates to introduce the braiding method to students using craft yarn.
  • Both boys and girls enjoyed making these fascinating round braided cords in a variety of colors. Once students mastered the easy braiding method, I provided store-bought foam Kumihimo looms to highly motivated students.
  • I also provided students with nicer, smoother yarn so that students could take the braided cords to a higher level to make finished jewelry with glued-on end caps and clasps

I must admit, I got hooked on the variety of beautiful colors and design combinations that can be created easily. I spent a good amount of time this summer making myself a supply of bracelets to match my work clothes and school colors!
