What educators are saying

Our interactive notebooks are a huge part of our everyday learning in my classroom and these extra activities were just what I needed! Now students can show me what they know in their notebooks! Thank you!
I loved this resource. I made packets for the students and we spent considerable time reviewing the different structures. They then were assessed on their ability to create their own graphic organizer. They did very well.

Description

Includes Nonfiction Text Structure Passages! Close Reading Informational Text Passages for Interactive Notebooks

This passage pack is full of text-marking lessons for active nonfiction reading. They focus on teaching and practicing identifying nonfiction text structure as well as identifying main ideas, transitions, and supporting details in paragraph and multi-paragraph passages.

This product is the perfect extension to my Interactive Reading Notebooks: Informational Text, but can easily be implemented whether you own the notebook or not.

Each passage includes at least 4 close reading activities. Students will annotate the passage for nonfiction text structure, then complete a 2D or 3D graphic organizer for text structure. Then, students will annotate main ideas, supporting details, and transitions/detail organization in the same paragraph before transferring it to a supporting detail graphic organizer.

Many of the graphic organizers are also included in two versions, one including more scaffolding to allow for even more differentiation.

With the exception of the first five demo passages (for teaching and/or reviewing), all passages are written at two different text complexities so that you can easily differentiate among students in your classroom.

Please check the preview file for a complete table of contents and some samples.

Here's an overview:

Part 1: The Basics

Passages 1-5 - demonstrate nonfiction text structures, then same demonstrate four different distinct ways details are organized in paragraphs

Part 2: More Practice

Passages 6-10 - more complex paragraphs that allow students to practice the skills learned in part 1; available in two different text complexities

Part 3: Multi-Paragraph Articles

Passages 11-15 - also available in two different text complexities, students analyze what nonfiction text structures look like among multi-paragraph articles (closer to what they'll see in the real world and on tests) and how topics and details are grouped and organized in longer articles
