Promote inclusivity in your classroom in a positive, age appropriate way. Teaching children about the civil rights journey of the LGBT community can be incorporated into any classroom for children of any age.
The first passage is a nonfiction passage about the history of the Stonewall Inn and its impact on the LGBT community in America.
The second passage is a historical fiction passage about a girl, Kalia, who goes to visit her two grandmothers in New York City during Pride Month. This is her first time visiting the city and she cannot wait to see the Empire State building and Statue of Liberty. She is confused when her grandparents take her to the Stonewall Inn. Kalia later learns that her grandmothers were at the Stonewall Inn on the day that made history in 1969. Kalia also goes to the annual NYC Pride Parade with her grandmothers. She develops a new understanding for pride and her family's history.
Ideas for how to use this product:
- Share as a read aloud and discussion
- Work in groups and discuss the information and questions from both passages
- Read both passages and discuss questions as a whole group
- Complete in a small reading groups
- Compare the civil rights journey of the LGBT community to other marginalized groups in history. Discuss the importance of standing up for injustice.
