Description

By the time your students get to you their math mindset may have already been formed. Having a growth mindset in math is so important for students to be successful.

This Math Mindset Journal includes a printable and digital version for Google Slides - perfect for distance learning or paperless classrooms! The journal will provide you with prompts to get your students reflecting on their mindset and will motivate them to see themselves as learners who are capable of doing math.

This product includes:

-Examine Your Math Mindset – fixed vs growth mindset

-Success Criteria for completing journal entries – includes a spot for students to provide evidence they met the criteria

-Your Brain: Before & After – students add images and words to a picture of a brain to represent their thinking about math before and after this unit

-Reflection pages based on the following Math Community Expectations:

-We believe math is beautiful

-We can all make sense of math

-We work together

-We make mistakes

-We can do hard things

-We share ideas & ask questions

-“Math Is…” reflection

-An editable rubric to assess the journal.

How to Use:

***This journal is open-ended. Math activities are NOT included on purpose. You will be provided with links to suggested websites that contain tons of great ideas. This allows you to tailor the learning to fit your students and what you believe will lead to greater success.***

1. Print a copy for each student . Select “Shrink Oversized Pages” when printing. If using the version for Google Slides, share with your students.

2. Visit the blog to see the activities I use with my class for each Math Community Expectation along with links to videos that can enhance your lessons.

3. If you are looking for activity ideas, check out the list of amazing websites included in the resource

4. Spend some time discussing growth mindset. Review the Math Mindset Journal Success Criteria and have students complete “Your Brain: Before & After” but just the left side.

5. For each lesson, show a video (ideas included in resource list) that fits with one of the Math Community Expectations. Present students with a task that highlights the importance of whichever Expectation you are focused on that day. Discuss the experience and tie it in with the Expectation. Students will then complete the corresponding reflection activity.

6. Students will consolidate their learning with the “Math Is…” reflection.

7. Assess the journal using the rubric provided.
