Description
The Grade 5, Unit 3: Substance Use activity packet is designed to meet both the overall and specific expectations outlined in the 2019 Ontario Health and Physical Education curriculum document.
Focus of the Unit:
The purpose of this resource is to introduce students to alcohol use, and the factors that can affect intoxication, and the decision to use this substance. In Grade 4 students explored the impact of vaping, and smoking on individuals so students should have previous knowledge in terms of exploring the short-term and long-term impact of substance use, and reasons why individuals might choose to use substances. Students explore both the short-term and long-term effects of alcohol use and misuse on individuals, and identify strategies that can be used to refuse this substance. Students also explore substances beyond alcohol, such as cannabis and tobacco, and explore what decision-making, assertiveness and refusal skills might look like in terms of dealing with pressures pertaining to alcohol use. The final part of this resource has students explore and identify personal and social factors that can affect a person’s decision to drink alcohol or use cannabis at different points in life.
Please note that a portion of this packet focuses on underage drinking and substance use as well as general consumption of alcohol by individuals (not necessarily underage).
Specific Expectation Addressed:
The specific expectations this resource addresses are as follows:
- D1.2: Describe the short- and long-term effects of alcohol use, and identify factors that can affect intoxication.
- D2.3: Demonstrate the ability to apply decision-making, assertiveness, and refusal skills to deal with pressures pertaining to alcohol use or other behaviours that could later lead to addiction.
- D3.3: Identify personal and social factors that can affect a person’s decision to drink alcohol or use cannabis at different points in their life.
