What educators are saying

This source really added to our discussion on Galileo and research. The visuals and primary source documents were perfect!!

Description

This Common Core literacy and writing DBQ (document-based question) project requires students to analyze the famous Catholic Church trial of Galileo and his sentence issued by the Church. Students read up to 4 primary source documents in groups, pairs or individually. Difficult vocabulary is defined right in the text! Students individually come to a conclusion and are individually accountable for writing a portion of a group project, paired or individual project.

After reading, students support claims about the trial and heresy with evidence from the text. They assert whether Galileo was indeed a heretic, based on the provided definition and put it their writing responses on a poster, or in a notebook.

This activity provides great historical perspective and relevance to a great primary source! Plus, a brief paragraph is provided at the end showing the 1992 apology by the Catholic Church!

Here's a breakdown of what is included in the 20-page packet:

1. Teacher Instructions.

2. DBQ Introduction Instructions

3. DBQ Templates for Responses

4. Five Primary Sources from the actual trial and evidence used

5. An annotation activity for modeling how to read primary sources.

6. Examples of projects and completed writing responses

This was worked great in my class and the templates can be used for other primary source document DBQ's throughout your course!
