This fabulous freebie is a WINNING addition to your classroom community! Simply print the page that represents your favorite team (All 32 American professional teams are included, as well as a generic one that just says “our favorite team.”) and include it into your calendar routine (or anytime!).
I've been doing this for the past 19 years and I'll tell you- even if your team is having a rough season (I’ve been there!), tracking their record ALWAYS turns into a great way to build community, connections, and conversation.
I guarantee you’ll discover a handful of kids who are reallllly knowledgeable about your team (it always cracks me up when they’re 5 years old and they know WAAAY more about it all than me- love it). Sometimes we even make a quick call to my husband (who also knows much more about football than me) and he’ll tell us really quickly what happened, who our next week’s opponent is, and what our chances look like. If there was an awesome play, we might even watch a quick highlight from online. You certainly don’t have to do all that, but those are just some fun ideas. On Fridays you could talk about the upcoming game and predict the score. It’s such a fun, engaging, real-life way to incorporate math into your day and you could bring the skill-level up or down to meet your kids wherever they’re at. Like when we talk about the score in kindergarten we discuss which number was bigger and how much that team won by... you get the idea! Just have fun with it! Your kids (and you!) will look forward to talking about this every Friday/Monday during football season.
