Figurative Language Snow Globe Craft Activity

Get your students defining, drawing, and writing figurative language examples with this fun snow globe craftivity. You can use these Figurative Language Snow Globes as a whole group lesson (modelling how to complete one for the whole class), as a language center activity, writer’s workshop, guided writing lesson, or early-finisher activity. If your students do not know the different figurative language terms, they may need an introductory lesson before they complete this activity.

Students will answer the prompts on each snow globe – for each prompt they will write a sentence containing figurative language according to the directions given and draw a picture illustrating their sentence. Students will also define the figurative language term on the base of each snow globe. Figurative language examples included in this resource are: simile, idiom, hyperbole, metaphor, personification, and onomatopoeia. They will then color and decorate their snow globes before cutting out and assembling the final product – a 3D snow globe.

This resource contains options for two different sizes of snow globes – one on full sheets (great for display in a larger area and for students who need a larger writing area), and one on half sheets (great for smaller display areas and smaller writing). Print only the size you need.

I have also included a blank template for adding your own prompts or questions. and requirements. Blank templates can also be used as a cover page in case you want to assemble your figurative language snow globes into a book format instead of a 3D craftivity.

A rubric is also provided for formative or summative assessment.

You have three different options for printing (you want your snowglobes to be sturdy enough to stand on their own):

- Print on white construction paper so your students only have a little bit of coloring to do (a good option if time is a factor)

- Print on white cardstock

- Print on regular paper, then glue onto construction paper and cut out around the snowglobe shape (students will color the snowglobes)

For easier completion, be sure students complete each page BEFORE they assemble the snowglobe.
