What educators are saying

My students weren't as engaged as I would have liked to have seen, but it could have been an off day for us as a class. The ones who were participating actively were on their GAME for this one!

Description

****This Factoring Polynomials Class Activity has been completely transformed! Please redownload the activity if you have already purchased the product.****

WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE?

  • 2 PowerPoint Shows to display the board (version 2 incorporates logic puzzle clues if you want to make it extra fun)
  • Teacher Directions
  • Student Recording Sheet
  • Grid Logic Puzzle (optional)
  • Answer Keys

HOW DOES THE ACTIVITY WORK?

Teachers display the PowerPoint Show on the board. The home screen includes 26 buttons that each link to a polynomial to factor. Once students factor the polynomial, you will click the button to display the answer, then click the home button - the button clicked on the home screen will disappear, showing that students have already worked that problem.

Although a student recording sheet is included for students to show their work, I find this type of activity is a great opportunity to bring the marker boards out. Students love it!

There are 26 polynomials students can factor.

THESE FACTORING TYPES INCLUDE:

  • Factor out a GCF
  • Factor a Difference of Squares
  • Factor a Quadratic Trinomial (5 problems include when a=1 and 5 problems include when a does not equal 1)
  • Factor a 4-Term Polynomial

OPTION TO INCORPORATE THE GRID LOGIC PUZZLE:

Want to make the activity extra engaging? Use the Puzzle Version of the activity! I grew up loving logic puzzles and have often wondered how I could incorporate them into the Secondary Math classroom (without it being an activity students could do if they are done with their work).

The Version 2 PowerPoint Show is included, which provides 7 clues throughout the activity students will use to solve the grid logic puzzle. As there are 7 clues and 26 problems, not every "button" links to a clue. Clue buttons are included in the Teacher Directions and Information Handout. Logic Puzzle and answer key included.

This activity works well in conjunction with my Factoring Polynomials Unit for Algebra 1.

Interpret expressions that represent a quantity in terms of its context.
Interpret parts of an expression, such as terms, factors, and coefficients.
Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For example, see 𝘹⁴ – 𝘺⁴ as (𝘹²)² – (𝘺²)², thus recognizing it as a difference of squares that can be factored as (𝘹² – 𝘺²)(𝘹² + 𝘺²).
Choose and produce an equivalent form of an expression to reveal and explain properties of the quantity represented by the expression.
Factor a quadratic expression to reveal the zeros of the function it defines.
