Distance Learning Poetry Writing: Digital Where I'm From Poem

I designed this product to help my students create "Where I'm From" poems as inspired by George Ella Lyon.

Slides 2-5 : Students will begin by reading and annotating the original poem. This always sparks great discussions as students unwrap Lyon's figurative language.

Slides 7 – 16 : Students will plan for their own poem by describing important memories, people, places, and objects. There are 8 categories in which students will brainstorm: objects, places, people, sayings, foods, holidays, accomplishments, and memories. For each category, students will complete a Google slide. An example is provided for each one to encourage figurative language and sensory details.

Slide 17 : After brainstorming, students will look through their slides and highlight their strongest work. These details are what students will piece together when forming their poems.

Slides 18 – 23 : Slides are included for students to draft each stanza of their poem. I love to have students take their work a step further and create a piece of art, diorama, presentation, or video to "present" their work. I have included an editable slide with directions for this component in case you would like to take a similar direction.

Slide 24 : I have also included an editable grading sheet that states student expectations and possible points to be earned.
