DICTIONARY DIG • Grades 4-6
Fun Scavenger Hunts to Encourage Use and Knowledge of the Dictionary
Dictionary Dig is a set of 32 Task Cards for students in grades 4-6. The activities are ideal for motivating your students to explore and become familiar with the dictionary.
Students go on scavenger hunts in the dictionary to find:
• words with a certain number of syllables
• words that start or end with certain letters
• plural spellings of words
• definitions of words
• words that start with certain prefixes
• compound words starting with certain letters
and lots more! The words selected are challenging to encourage use of the dictionary.
Students write their answers on a Student Record Sheet . Also included are an Answer Key and an Award for completion of the unit. Templates are included so you can add individualized Task Cards.
Dictionary Dig is great for independent seatwork or for small groups at a learning center.
Other uses for Dictionary Dig include:
• extra credit
• homework assignments
• activities for early finishers
• morning warm-up activities
• instant activities for substitutes
