Description

Do you find that typical compound sentence activities aren't rigorous enough for the concept to carry over into your students' writing? If you're looking for something a bit more challenging to get them thinking and actually practicing writing compound sentences, this packet is perfect. Students will get examples and a variety of compound sentence exercises to make it really stick!

⭐️ What you'll get (Click the PREVIEW button above for a closer look)

  • Two-page mini lesson on compound sentence structure and practice activities to learn how to form compound sentences, how to distinguish them from simple sentences (such as when there is one subject and two predicates), when/where to use a comma, which conjunction is needed (and, but, or, so), and how to avoid repetition when joining sentences by using pronouns.

  • Hands-on activity to practice building compound sentences, choosing the correct conjunction, and inserting a comma in the correct place.

  • 24 Task cards to work with compound sentences in a variety of ways (See description of tasks below)

  • Answer keys and response sheets for task cards

  • Multiple printing options including color or BW and with or without name lines

  • Multiple digital options including: Google Slides, Google Forms, and task cards on individual slides for presentation

⭐️ Your students will finally feel confident with writing compound sentences! After the mini lesson, there are multiple opportunities for students to practice identifying, modifying, and writing sentences. Use the task cards as bell ringers, pair work, or in centers or stations, as your students work their way from simple sentence structure tasks to more complex writing activities including using the prompts to create their own sentences. There are also multiple opportunities to practice conjunction and comma placement.

Here are some of the types of practice activities you will find in this resource:

  • identifying/choosing correctly formed compound sentences

  • joining simple sentences to form a compound sentence

  • changing a simple sentence to a compound sentence

  • taking a simple sentence and adding another clause (their own ideas)

  • using given words to create their own compound sentence

  • Taking a simple sentence and changing it to a compound sentence in three different ways (using and, but, or, so)
