The Acadians – From Settlement to Deportation

This resource includes information on the history of Acadia from its first settlement until the expulsion (deportation) of the Acadians in the 1750’s.

1) The first page of the resource is a list of 16 vocabulary words used in the first four passages. These are best completed as the students read each passage;

Following the vocabulary page, there are four one-page informational texts:

2) Acadia, an Introduction; 3) Acadia’s Early Years; 4) Caught in the Middle; and 5) British Rule.

-- Each of the four passages has a pre-reading question which can be used as a discussion point in class as well.

-- Each passage has a separate page of questions relating to the text. The final question on the page is a research or opinion question.

-- Answer keys are included.

5) There is a fifth passage, “The Oath of Allegiance and its Aftermath” which is shorter in length, has no pre-reading question but does have an activity in which students record “3 Facts I Learned”, “2 Questions I Still Have” and “1 Opinion I now Have”.

6) Following the texts is a one-page “word wall” activity in which students record six words of their own choosing that relate to the history of the Acadians. They provide the reason they think each word is appropriate. An example is provided to get them started. This would make a great discussion or group activity! There is no answer key for this activity as it is subjective.

7) Finally, there is a two page Multiple choice quiz which also includes two short-answer questions. There is an answer key for this activity.

The Loyalists – Texts and Activities

This resource consists of three informational texts. The first is an introduction to the subject of Loyalists, the second is about the American Revolution and the third covers the Loyalists as a group during the Revolution and their resettlement in Canada.

--- The introductory text is shorter than #2 and #3 and the questions on the same page. #2 and #3 each have a full page of text, and a full page of questions that assess student understanding of the text, an opinion question, and a short vocabulary activity.

--- Following this are supplementary activities - the first “Test Your Learning” consists of ten T or F statements - students choose the four that are false and correct them. This could be used as a short quiz of the material read in the texts.

-- There are two research activities as well. The first asks students to compose and answer questions they might ask a Loyalist if they could speak to one in person. The questions are expected to be logical and sensible and students should do needed research to pose the questions as well as answer them. To complete the last activity, students need to go online or find books that include personal stories of Loyalists.

The Seven Years’ War 10 Graphic Organizers, Activity

This set of graphic organizers is designed to help organize student learning of the Seven Years’ War. The organizers touch on the most important aspects of the war and as worksheets are good supplements to your classroom teaching.

The topics, in order, are:

1) The Background of the Seven Years’ War;

2) British and French Colonies in North America;

3) French and British Military in North America;

4) Historical Figures of the Seven Years’ War;

5) Role of the First Nations Peoples;

6) Fort Duquesne and Louisbourg;

7) The Siege of Quebec;

8) The Battle of the Plains of Abraham;

9) The Treaty of Paris 1763; and

10) North America after 1763.

Although I have numbered the pages in order as they appear in the Table of Contents, but in some cases, you could switch the order if that suits your lesson planning. I have also tried to provide as much information as possible for the answers keys, but again, you as the classroom teacher can decide what is relevant for your students.

Due to copyright, I cannot include the article in this resource, but you as a teacher can copy it and use it with your students. I have designed the activity so that students do NOT have to read the article but I would highly recommend it as a reading supplement for your students and would work well with the page 11 activity in this resource. I have also included a follow-up activity if the students read the article - basically it is having students evaluate what they think were the most important outcomes of the war and then rethinking their choices after they read the article. There is no answer key for this extra activity as the answers are subjective. I have included an answer key for the ten graphic organizers.

Joseph Brant (Thayendagenea)

This resource includes four reading passages about Joseph Brant (Thayendagenea). They cover the role he played in colonial North America re the results of the Seven Years’ War and the American Revolution and the resettlement of the Iroquois nation in what is now Ontario.

1) The first page of the resource is a list of 16 vocabulary words used in the four passages. These are best completed as the students read each passage;

2) Following the vocabulary page, there are four one-page informational texts that chronicle the life of Joseph Brant from his birth in Ohio to his death in Burlington, Ontario. The four together are about thirteen hundred words in length. The first three passages include a “Discussion Point” which can be done orally with the students or can be answered in written form;

3) A page of questions, 6 in total, which require the students to show comprehension and interpretation of what they have read;

4) An answer key is provided for the vocabulary words and the questions. I have given more information in the answers than you might require from your students!
