What educators are saying
Description
This set of BEGINNING BIOGRAPHIES offers simple biographies featuring 10 famous people from America's history (5 females and 5 males). They're a great, developmentally appropriate way to introduce primary readers to the genre.
There are TWO DIFFERENTIATED VERSIONS of each biography to accommodate for a variety of reading levels in your classroom. In this set, I've included texts for:
- Abraham Lincoln
- Rosa Parks
- Neil Armstrong
- Betsy Ross
- Theodore Roosevelt
- Ruby Bridges
- Jesse Owens
- Helen Keller
- Benjamin Franklin
- Amelia Earhart
Each biography includes simple SIGHT WORDS for children to learn and trace. I've also included relevant VOCABULARY words in each book that are important to understanding the content.
A portion of each book does not include illustrations. This was done intentionally so students could ILLUSTRATE THEIR BOOKS. When readers become illustrators and make decisions about pictures to match the text, it can strengthen comprehension and aid in their rereading of the story.
DISCUSSION PROMPTS and HIGHER LEVEL QUESTIONS have been suggested to help you check for and extend student comprehension. Students may have questions of their own, but these can help get the conversations started, if needed.
If your students are ready, I've included "MY NOTES" TEMPLATES for each of the featured people in the biographies. You may want to use these to show children how to draw or jot notes to remember important and interesting facts. Later, the students can use their notes to "quiz" their friends or to prepare a short report to present to the class.
If you'd like to extend your study of biographies with connected activities, I've included suggestions you may want to try, such as:
- Timelines
- Who am I? (Game)
- American Heroes Parade
- Character Mapping
Last, I've included AWARDS your children can present to each famous person featured in the biography set. There are more awards than people, varying in difficulty of vocabulary... you can choose the ones that best meet their developmental needs. It's very interesting to watch the children as they reason through why a certain individual should receive a certain award. Examples include:
- Most Intelligent
- Most Forgiving
- Most Talented
- Most Adventurous
- Most Fair
- And more!
TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This was a great resource for my biographies unit in second grade. I have a group of students who are reading well below grade level and finding biographies on their level can be a little challenging. This worked very well for us." (William S.)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This is an AMAZING product! I love how you left space for the kids to become illustrators of each book! FANTASTIC!" (Stephanie S.)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “I appreciate the variety of notable Americans in this pack. We will use the awards as part of our integration with opinion writing this month." (Brenda C.)
