What educators are saying

I was able to use this unit to introduce herbs and spices and several of the activities! My students loved the fun activities!
My students loved all of the resources! I really enjoyed setting up the 5 senses portion of the spice unit! They were really engaged in trying to figure out what spice was what and couldn't stop talking about what they would use it for in my kitchens!

    Description

This complete unit contains the instructional and application activities you need to teach your students about herbs and spices in a fun and engaging way. There are activities that suit both in-person as well as remote distance learning to fit a fully remote, hybrid, or in-person school model. Students will be introduced to herbs and spices from definition to types, flavors, history, geography, and cultural blends. There are Powerpoints/Google Slides for instruction, organizers for notes, interactive activities, articles with questions to deepen learning, and recipes for hands-on labs for testing and tasting! If used fully this should provide approximately 3 weeks of instruction.

    With this purchase you get:

    1. Google Slides introducing the Geography of Herb & Spice Origins
    2. Organizer for researching the Geographic Origins of Herbs & Spices
    3. Flippity Game Link where students can drag herbs & spices onto a world map based on the origins they researched
    4. Google Slides introducing the flavor profiles of common herbs & spices and the difference between these terms
    5. Organizer for a sensory stations activity where students can sample different herbs and spices and guess which is which. Alternatively, this can be used with the Google Slides mentioned above as a notes sheet. Key included for this.
    6. A home-based activity for inventorying the spices in one's home kitchen and researching their origin, flavor profile, and usage
    7. An article on the health benefits of herbs & spices (with questions)
    8. An article on the polarizing herb cilantro and why some think it tastes soapy (with Google Form of questions)
    9. Worksheet where students research common spices used in different countries/regions as well as common seasoning blends (garam masala, z'aatar, etc.)
    10. Recipe & Sensory Evaluation Lab Sheets for students to taste these herbs on cooked potatoes

    PLUS:

    • A 2-day "Kitchen Medicine" Health Benefits Mini Research Project and
    • A 7-day Herb and Spice Seasoning Blends Extension activity including recipes and a project for students to create, research, and apply global seasoning blends into their own creative appetizer.

Help students learn to prepare delicious and flavorful meals with this essential unit for any culinary course. This unit is interdisciplinary, teaching appreciation for different cultures, the science of spices and herbs, and their absolutely fascinating history! I use this with grades 9-12 but as a middle school teacher as well I plan to incorporate many parts of it with my 7th and 8th graders too! Most items are editable to suit your classes. If you need an editable version that isn't included due to the Google format, simply send me a message or email!
