Addition and Subtraction Math Centers - Activities and Games

This addition and subtraction pack has over 100 pages filled with over 20 different addition and subtraction math center games and activities! This resource is perfect for developing number sense and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

This addition and subtraction pack includes a variety of approaches to developing number sense, using multiple visual aids, manipulatives, and formats to engage a wide variety of learners. There are recording pages for every game and activity so you can monitor student progress and understanding!

Addition and Subtraction Games and Activities Included:

• Spill a Sentence: Using dual-color counters, students spill a targeted number of counters and observe how many of each color turn up. They color in the circles to record their spill, and then write a number sentence to represent their spill. (Available in target numbers 5-10)

• Number Trains: Using two colors of snap cubes, students create trains of their targeted number, aligning them with the train on their recording page. They color in the connecting cubes to record their train, and then write a number sentence to represent their train. (Available in target numbers 5-10)

• Bean Drop: Using dual-color beans, students spill a targeted number of beans and observe how many of each color turn up. They color in the beans to record their spill and then write a number sentence to represent their spill. (Available in target numbers 5-10)

• Addition Bump: A student favorite! This dice game supports subitizing, counting on strategies, and ultimately fluency with addition facts (4 Versions- 2 dice addition, 3 dice addition, doubles facts addition, doubles +1 addition)

• Fact Family Books: Book templates for target numbers 5-10. Each book includes a cover and visuals to support each fact family.

• Fact Family Snowmen: Fact Family Snowmen: Asks students to select from 60 different fact family snowmen cards. Using that fact family, students then write 2 addition sentences and 2 subtraction sentences on their recording sheets.

• Fact Family Creations: Students cut out the numbers at the bottom of the page and arrange them in the template to create 4 different math sentences (available in target numbers 5-10)

• Parts and Wholes: A great visual representation to show addition and subtraction as wholes and parts. Multiple pages of this activity, as well as blank templates for teachers to create even more targeted learning (e.g. enrich using higher numbers, or provide multiple exposure to smaller numbers for reinforcement).

• Missing Parts (Dominoes): A great visual to support finding missing addends. Students are shown half of a domino and asked to create the other half based on the total number of dots required.

• Domino Addition: Blank templates to use with your own dominoes. Asks students to use these great visuals to create multiple opportunities for addition practice.

• Fact Family Bonds: Another great visual support for understanding parts and wholes (addends and sums). Students are asked to roll dice to create the addends, find their sum, and then place them in this visual organizer. Using those 3 numbers, students then make fact families.

• Number Bonds: Using this great visual tool, students are asked to find missing addends and sums. Multiple pages of this activity, as well as a blank template for teachers to create even more targeted learning (e.g. enrich using higher numbers, or provide additional exposure to smaller numbers for reinforcement).

• Roll & Record: A great way for students to see the multiple combinations possible for each number 2-12. It is also a great way introduction to probability!

• Ten-Frame Cards: (Numbers 1-10) Replace your old playing cards with these great visual number cards. They are also a great tool to use with Flip & Compare.

• Flip & Compare: (2 & 3 addends version) A variation on the old card game "War". Each student flips 2 or 3 cards and adds them together. The student with the greatest sum wins. The recording page supports students as they learn to write addition sentences.

• Roll & Compare: (2 & 3 addends version) Another variation on the old card game "War". Each student rolls 2 or 3 dice and adds them together. The student with the greatest sum wins. The recording page supports students as they learn to write addition sentences.

• Add or Subtract?: Students are given multiple number sentences with the "+" and "-" signs missing. Students are challenged to consider the answer to both options and decide which would make the sentence true.

• Balancing Sides: This is a great visual tool for students to understand the concept of an equal sign. Many students see "6 + 3 = 2 + 7" as "6 + 3 = 2" and do not even see the "7". This exercise helps them to recognize multiple addends on both sides of an equal sign, as they are given 4 numbers and asked to place 2 on either side of the scale to "balance the equation". A blank template of this activity is also provided for teachers to further target student learning.

• Balancing Sides Continued: Students are asked to find the missing addend on the balancing scale.

• Number Line Addition & Subtraction: (1-10 version & 1-20 version) Students learn to use number lines as a tool to solve addition and subtraction problems. This activity is differentiated, as some provide students with the additional language "start on _____ and jump forward/backward _______".

• True or False?: Students cut out multiple addition sentences. They are asked to determine whether the sentences are true or false and paste them onto the appropriate side of the table.
