47 Days is written as a novelette excerpt from a longer work, Surviving the Fatherland. As an opening chapter to a longer story, 47 Days tells the real life harrowing survival story of life-long friends Günter and Helmut, who battle the elements, animal attacks, bombings, and run-ins with the German army to stay alive and return home. Based on the author’s own family history and anchored in historical accounts, this is a story which highlights and celebrates the fortitude and resilience of the human spirit and the strength of children who overcome war-time obstacles.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is an historical fiction novel set in Germany during World War II. The story follows Bruno, a 9-year-old boy growing up in a sheltered and privileged life, unaware of the war's realities or his father's involvement with the Nazi regime. When Bruno's family moves to the countryside, he discovers a fence separating their home from a concentration camp. Through the fence, Bruno meets and befriends Shmuel, a Jewish boy his age, leading to a poignant exploration of friendship and the war's impact on civilians.
Number the Stars is the Newbery Medal winning novel by Lois Lowry. The year is 1943 and Copenhagen has been overrun by the German Army. Readers will enjoy the coming of age story of Annemarie Johansen who desperately strives to be brave amidst the German occupation as her family strives to save her friend. When it becomes clear that something must be done, a daring plan is created to try to smuggle the entire Jewish population of Denmark across the seas to Sweden.
